About Soo Pilots
Soo Pilots - EAA 1437 is an EAA Chapter based at Sanderson Field (KANJ) in Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan. Our city is home to the Soo Locks, where Lake Superior and the Saint Marys river meet. It is the oldest city in Michigan, and was founded by French missionaries and traders in 1668.
The Soo Locks handle boats carrying iron ore, grain, coal, and other bulk materials. "Salties" arrive via the Saint Lawrence Seaway to pick up a nd deliver cargo to and from other parts of the world. Cruise ships regularly lock up and down so their passengers can view the beautiful scenery on the shored of Lake Superior. You can watch the action as 1000 foot ships lock up and down from Lake Superior.
Arriving by air and landing on runway 32 or 14 gives you a great overhead view of the locks in action while in the pattern.
Passenger service is available at Chippewa County International Airport (KCIU), located approximately 17 miles from Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan.
Our sister city, Sault Sainte Marie, Ontario, Canada, also has passenger service at Sault Sainte Marie Airport (CYAM). Be sure to bring your passport for entry into the United States.
Sanderson Field is also a US Customs port of entry and is used by private pilots from Canda and all over the world. Our 5000 foot runway can accomodate many kinds of aircraft.
